Lake Tahoe Area History Present and Future

Wherever there is a remote chance, somebody will chance it. Wherever there is a risk, somebody will risk it. Wherever there is a way to win, somebody will attempt it. In Nevada you can bet on it.

Washoe, Paiute and Shoshone tribes who camped along the Truckee River long before there was a town called Reno, liked to bet on games and contests when they gathered for festivals and ceremonies. For centuries, native tribes had the place to themselves, including the shores of Lake Tahoe.

The discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1859 brought a flood of would-be gold miners to the area. Tahoe became the center of a lively commerce for the wood needed to supply the mines, the new boomtowns and the railroad. Gambling was legal in Nevada until 1910 when the "Progressives" group succeeded in getting it banned. From there gambling went underground, using cigar stores as fronts for operations.

In 1931 gambling was legalized again in the hope that it would help boost the economy during the depression. In the years since, the great quality of life in the Truckee Meadows has attracted other industries such as Microsoft Licensing, Intuit, iGo, Amazon.com, John Deere & Company and Kal Kan. Perhaps the best way to describe the Reno/Lake Tahoe region today is "on the move." Its fast-growing population and the effects of competition to the region's gaming and tourism-based economy have brought about significant changes spawning new ideas, development and a community effort to plan for the region's future.

Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Lake Tahoe are among the fastest growing communities in the West. Today, these cities are experiencing an evolution of sorts with a great number of expansion and renovation projects, new business and job development, housing projects and golf resorts, new attractions and leisure activities. You'll also find an emphasis on arts and culture and community partnerships taking place in the region.

Increased competition for the region's gaming and tourism-based economy are also of great concern to city and tourism officials. The proliferation of gaming has now reached 48 states in some form. Native American Reservation Casinos located within Reno/Lake Tahoe's traditional core markets are drawing customers who previously traveled to this area to gamble. In addition, competition from Las Vegas megaresorts combined with a decrease in air service challenges that must be addressed.

Today, local government officials along with leaders in the gaming and tourism industry are working diligently to find new ways of marketing the region and improving its product. More than $ 1 billion worth of development is planned and funded for Reno and Sparks combined, and South Lake Tahoe has $250 million earmarked for redevelopment and improvement plans to its downtown. These redevelopment projects will result in a fresh look with new attractions and amenities appealing to visitors and locals alike.

Efforts to continue diversifying the economy will also help offset the effects of gaming and tourism competition. The business climate has recently attracted a slew of new companies to the area. Industrial, technology, manufacturing, retail and even the motion picture industry now play a vital role in the area's future.
